3 fast facts about Mental Health:
1. Mental health isn’t just about not “being mad”
Some people call mental health “well being” or “emotional health”. Being in good mental health enables a person to reach his or her full potential. Such a person will be able to play a full and active role in their families, companies and communities.
2. Mental health is an issue that everybody should understand
Like our physical health, our mental health does not always stay constant. It may vary with our life circumstances and as we go through different stages in our lives.
All of us feel stressed or frightened or lonely from time to time. Most of us are able to handle these feelings and they pass after a relatively short time. However, at times, they develop into something more serious and that could happen to any one of us.
3. Mental health issues can be overcome, with the help of a supportive community
Some people feel uncomfortable about mental health issues and do not like to talk about their feelings much. But it is healthy for everybody to know how they are feeling, and work through any issues they may have.
There is really no reason why we should continue to allow mental health problems to be stigmatized. A physically ill person sees a doctor, gets treated and becomes well again. Why should it be different for somebody with a mental health issue?
World Mental Health Day is observed on 10 October every year. Its twin objectives are raising awareness of mental health issues around the world and mobilizing efforts to make mental healthcare a reality.
